Movement of Fresh Wine Grapes from an EGVM Quarantine Area: USDA allows the movement of fresh wine grapes from an EGVM quarantine area using a similar systems approach certification method as fresh grapes for consumption. *

In Summary: fresh grapes may be moved from an EGVM quarantine area: out of state, or to a county in California that is not issuing EGVM compliance agreements to their wineries, if the following conditions can be met:

  • Be more than 500 meters from the boundary of a vineyard where EGVM has been detected since August 6, 2010. EGVM Finds After August 6, 2010
    • Vineyards less than 500 meters from an EGVM find after August 6, 2010 may ship out of state, or to a county in California that is not issuing EGVM compliance agreements to their wineries by applying an approved post-harvest treatment. Please contact the Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office for more information.
  • Have an existing Integrated Pest Management program targeting EGVM
  • Be trapped (1 trap/5 acres, 2 traps minimum) for EGVM prior to harvest. All traps shall be in place at least 30 days prior to the start of harvest. All mating disruption shall be removed (if applicable) at the time of trap placement.
  • Be inspected (a minimum of 300 bunches must be inspected no more than 7 days before harvest)
  • Have a compliance agreement allowing for the movement of hand harvested fresh wine grapes.

Additionally:

  • Grapes must be hand harvested and must be transported in refrigerated conveyances
  • Shipments of grapes may not include any material other than grapes, including leaves, litter, culls, debris, etc.
  • Grape bunches must be trimmed clear of all material other than grapes
  • Grapes must be certified with the placement of a diamond stamp on each container; Interstate shipments must be accompanied by a Federal Shield
