European Grapevine Moth (EGVM)

Safeguarding of Grapes at Wineries

Below are requirements for safeguarding of grape shipments at wineries while waiting for processing.

Every effort should be made to process grape shipments originating from within EGVM quarantine areas within 2 hours of arriving at the crush facility, including prioritizing processing these shipments before shipments grown outside the quarantine area.

To ensure that possible EGVM within the load of grapes are contained, if load is not processed within 2 hours, one of the options below must be followed:

  • Tarp the bins
  • Move the bins into an enclosed area
  • Every 2 hours, beyond the initial 2 hours that loads are waiting to be processed, the winery must inspect the trucks waiting and the area around the trucks
    • Inspect the trucks for grapes/debris/ life stages of EGVM that have escaped the gondolas/ bins. This includes checking the areas around the bins, truck/trailer frame, wheel fenders, etc.
    • Inspect the ground around the trucks and area where trucks are staged/ waiting
    • Any grapes/debris/ life stages of EGVM found not within the bins must be contained:
      • Either returned to the bins to be processed with the rest of the load, or
      • Picked up and disposed of with other green waste according to your compliance agreement
