What do Volunteer Firefighters do?
Under the direction of the station Fire Chief, Volunteer Firefighters take on a diverse range of assignments, including:
- Perform modern fire suppression operations.
- Provide emergency medical care, for trauma and medical emergencies.
- Rescue trapped victims.
- Attend regularly scheduled training classes and drills.
- Drive and operate fire apparatus.
- Perform routine non-emergency tasks, including cleaning and maintenance of the fire station and its equipment.
- Project a positive image to the public as a representative of the county fire service.
- Encourage public support for fire suppression and prevention.
What are the qualifications for Volunteer Firefighters?
To be considered as a Volunteer Firefighter candidate, you must:

- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid California Class C driver’s license (Class B with a minimum fire service endorsement required to drive apparatus over 26,000 lbs.).
- Possess no medical or physical disabilities that might impede your ability to perform firefighting and rescue functions.
- Obtain California Title 22 First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and DOT Hazardous Material Aware- ness certifications within the first year.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations at all hours of the day and night.
- Think clearly and decisively in stressful situations.
- Carry out complex directions.
- Work in hazardous and unfamiliar situations.
- Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time, often in extreme weather conditions.
- Climb ladders.
- Pull 100 pounds of dead weight at a distance of 50 feet.
- Meet and maintain the physical standards required for fire and rescue work.
- Learn modern structural and wildland fire suppression techniques.
- Learn First-Aid and CPR techniques.
- Communicate effectively with the public, personnel from other agencies, and other volunteers.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
