The County of Sonoma &
the Bay Area Air Quality Management District

We are happy to report that the General Services, Energy & Sustainability Division (E&S) was awarded one of 80 highly sought after grants from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Board of Directors, awarding $3 million in Climate Protection Grants to Bay Area local governments and nonprofits for implementation of innovative projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A large pool of applicants vied for these opportunities.

The grant that the County of Sonoma was awarded funds an outreach effort to inform and provide assistance to governments and agencies on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction measures. What this means to us is that we will be able to take practical knowledge about conservation, renewable resources, and lowering our GHG emissions and share it with other cities, counties and agencies who may need assistance to begin their journey toward reducing their carbon footprint.

Our outreach will be made through the distribution of the free Best Practices Guidebook, workshops, technical assistance, and the selection of an agency to test the tools and best practices contained in the Guidebook with our assistance.

The Guidebook includes sustainable policies, best practices, case studies, quantitative and financial analysis tools, as well as step-by-step “how-to” guidance for program implementation.

The workshops will include an overview of the Guidebook, facilitated discussions of best practices and case studies, training on implementation of best practices, and discussion of performance metrics and financing options.

Receiving this grant is both a validation of our environmental approach and recognition that we have accepted a leadership role with respect to regional climate protection initiatives. The County of Sonoma will continue to be a leader in environmental programs in our region and for the State.
