The Sonoma County Regional Parks Department and SMART District are working together to construct a 1.3 mile multi-use pathway (aka SMART Trail) from Hearn Avenue to the Joe Rodota Trail. This is a multi-jurisdictional partnership project that involves other partners such as the Sonoma County Transportation Authority and City of Santa Rosa. This is one segment of the 70 mile SMART Trail that will eventually provide a north south bicycle and pedestrian pathway from Larkspur in Marin County to Cloverdale in Sonoma County. Furthermore, this pathway will provide connections to other bicycle and pedestrian paths such as the Joe Rodota Trail and Prince Memorial Greenway.

The pathway improvements will be located within the SMART railroad right of way. The County and SMART will enter into an agreement for the improvements and maintenance.

From Hearn Avenue to Sebastopol Road the pathway will be located on the east side of the railroad bed. From Sebastopol Road to the existing Joe Rodota Trail, the pathway will be located on the west side of the railroad bed. The pathway starts at the northern intersection of Hearn Avenue where there is an existing concrete sidewalk and bike lanes. The pathway continues north to Colgan Creek Channel where a new clear span pedestrian/bicycle bridge will be installed. The estimated size of the prefabricated bridge is 10 feet wide by 50 feet long which will span from top of bank to top of bank. The bridge will be supported by two concrete piers at each end.

Project Schedule

The environmental study for the pathway has been completed. The tentative construction start date is late 2012 and finishing within 45 days.

Funding

The project is funded by Santa Rosa Southwest Redevelopment Funds and Regional Bicycle Program (federal funds).
