PLAYING IT SAFE ON THE COAST AND THE RIVER

Just because the river and coast look calm doesn’t mean they are. This time of year, there are no lifeguards on duty along the Russian River, and Regional Parks’ free lifejacket loaner stations won’t be open until Memorial Day. At the coast, strong rip currents, steep beaches, heavy surf and sudden ground swells make swimming unsafe and can make even playing in the water dangerous. Remember, never turn your back to the ocean. Also, cell service is spotty along the river and coast, so a call for help might not get through quickly.
